Meet The Team

Electric Garage is built on deep engineering expertise. Our team brings together decades of experience across automotive design, high-voltage electrical systems, and EV technology — all right here in New Zealand.

Sam Brown

Sam Brown

Founder

Sam Brown has a longstanding background in both the auction and automotive industries. Since 2016, he has been deeply engaged with electric vehicles, starting with his first Nissan Leaf. After extensive experience with EV ownership and high-voltage systems, including the BYD E6, Sam sought to address the challenge of aging EV batteries firsthand.

Today, as a founder of Electric Garage, he leverages his expertise in multi-cell EV battery packs to develop innovative solutions, including custom-designed 40 kWh Nissan Leaf replacement batteries. His work ensures extended EV longevity, reflecting his commitment to technical innovation and practical EV solutions.

Will Hazelwood

Will Hazelwood

Automotive Electronics Engineer

Will is a highly skilled electronics engineer with deep experience in motorsport electrical systems, embedded control systems, and high-voltage vehicle integration. A key part of the Electric Garage engineering team, Will brings a rare combination of hands-on craftsmanship and advanced technical design to every project.

Graduating with honours in Electronic Engineering from the University of Waikato, Will's career spans leading-edge roles including electrical engineering for Rodin Cars' FZero prototype and the FZED production model. His work has ranged from high-voltage KERS systems and ECU tuning to custom PCB development and loom manufacturing to MIL-spec standards.

Will's background includes investigative R&D at Gallagher and professional training in EFI tuning and motorsport wiring through the HPA Academy. He is fluent in C, C++, ARM assembly, Python, and embedded systems, with tools like Altium, MATLAB, Verilog, and SolidWorks.

Outside of work, Will is an avid motorcyclist and track racing enthusiast. His passion for performance engineering extends beyond the lab and onto the road — fuelling a deep personal interest in high-efficiency systems and cutting-edge vehicle design.

Will plays a crucial role in ensuring that Electric Garage battery systems are not only electrically sound but engineered to the highest standards of safety, compatibility, and performance.

Mark Crossan

Mark Crossan

Mechanical & Structural Engineer

Mark Crossan brings over two decades of hands-on mechanical engineering experience in the automotive industry, covering high-performance vehicle manufacturing, production engineering, and advanced design consultancy.

A qualified automotive engineer (BSc Hons 2:1 in Engineering – Automotive Systems), Mark has held senior technical roles in New Zealand and the UK. As Technical Director at Rodin Cars, he led the engineering and production of low-volume performance vehicles, establishing structured systems for manufacturing, quality control, CAD/PLM, supplier management, and programme delivery, successfully delivering two new vehicles within demanding timeframes.

Through Intrepid Design Consulting Engineering, he has provided production engineering, reverse engineering, and programme management services to organisations including Prodrive and DS Transmissions. His expertise includes design for manufacture, CAD platforms (NX, Solid Edge, SolidWorks), and implementing robust, ISO-aligned engineering processes.

At Electric Garage, Mark applies disciplined engineering practice and real-world production experience to develop reliable, scalable automotive solutions built from first principles.

Mark Monson

Mark Monson

Electrical & Electronics Engineer

Mark is a veteran electrical and electronics engineer with over three decades of experience across industrial automation, embedded systems, power systems, and product development. At Electric Garage, he focuses on system design, compliance, and high-voltage integration — applying rigorous engineering standards to every part of the battery system.

A traditionally trained engineer with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical & Electronic) from the University of Canterbury, Mark holds an EWRB practising licence and has a strong working knowledge of NZ, IEC, and UL standards. His career spans diverse roles across the automation, manufacturing, and product development sectors, including time at Scott Technology, Argus Heating, and his own consultancy, Monson Electrical.

Mark's skills include PLC/HMI/SCADA development, PCB design, low-voltage distribution, and custom electronics. He works across hardware and software platforms — from Beckhoff and CodeSys to C++, Raspberry Pi, and Fusion 360.

Mark has also worked extensively on BYD E6 EV high voltage LFP batteries, including reconditioning and manual balancing.

Outside of work, Mark is an avid motorcyclist and an accomplished home cheesemaker. His methodical, hands-on approach and attention to detail make him a valuable part of the Electric Garage engineering team.
